Could it be that the Trust Divers bring a few domestic seahorses along each week and let them go in Studland bay? This would help them with their case to protect the habitat of the Seahorse by banning anchoring. The evidence now is that anchoring doesn't damage the eelgrass so what's all the fuss about? I have to say, it is very well made and there are some interesting pieces in its 15 minute duration and is worth a view.Alexnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6916002254569181595.post-464406394539821672011-02-08T14:54:28.795-08:002011-02-08T14:54:28.795-08:00BORG has an engineer with Yachtmaster qualificatio...BORG has an engineer with Yachtmaster qualifications researching these Eco-moorings, and when he has reported back to us, hopefully we can lay this idea by the heels once and for all. I am in close touch with him. His first re-action when he saw the manufacturers website: 'they want us to tie our boats to THOSE things?!'.

However, the basic idea of a small number of moorings arranged so they do not damage the Eelgrass would seem to be acceptable to all parties so at least we are no longer in complete deadlock over all this.

BORG and the RYA agree with SBPA that an anchoring ban is simply not needed here, and we continue to work on that basis.

BORG is also making a strong case that Studland is the most heavily used sea anchorage in the UK, and as such provides a regionally important social and recreational facility for Poole and Solent leisure boat owners. The knock on effect of closing the anchorage would have considerable economic implications for the marine support businesses, not only in Studland, but in Poole where fuel suppliers, mooring contractors, boat repair yards, chandlers, as well as accomodation and catering services would all see a drop in business because boat people could no longer enjoy visiting Studland Bay. How many visitors bring their boats to Poole specifically because they CAN go out and enjoy Studland? Judging from the queues at the Poole launching slips, quite a large number! Legislation demands that the 'social and economic impacts of creating an MCZ must be taken in to account' and a recent ministerial statement affirms the government intends to take this aspect seriously when deciding on MCZ locations. BORGs estimate is that over 30,000 people a year arrive in the bay by boat, a figure that appears to be confirmed by Natural Englands as yet unpublished survey results (which I have seen).

Keep up the good work SBPA!Jon, founder of BORGhttp://www.boatownersresponsegroup.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6916002254569181595.post-46057768663371913762011-02-08T14:02:51.301-08:002011-02-08T14:02:51.301-08:00I have recently posted on the Scuttlebutt forum th...I have recently posted on the Scuttlebutt forum that Natural England cannot just turn up with 30 HMP's (Helix Mooring Points) and screw them 8ft into the fragile seabed of Studland Bay,
It will need approval from the Studland Parish Council, Purbeck District Council, Crown Estates, MMO etc and first a full enviromental impact/risk report should be forthcoming.
I have suggested that might want to put one in and test /trial it for 12-24 months with a 35ft ex ships lifeboat attached to it as they are unsinkable and can be picked up for around £1000.
However, in these hard times I can think of better ways to spend the UK's limited public funds and it would be prudent to leave Studland Bay alone in its present unspoilt state.
What is important is that the people of Studland get their say on any proposed changes to their local enviroment, rather than being ignored by public servants trying to justifiy their existence by draining public funds on will'o the whisp projects.ARCO7 ..aka Arnold Colemannoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6916002254569181595.post-57275548597124499082011-02-08T12:55:31.534-08:002011-02-08T12:55:31.534-08:00I think it total madness to fill the bay with untr...I think it total madness to fill the bay with untried and untested eco moorings at vast expense at a time of austerity. Is it worth doing? Would boats pay to moor on these or still prefer to anchor ? Who would be responsible for these moorings ? How would they be insured and who would maintain them ? How would they collect the mooring fees ? If these moorings are going to be in all year round won't they spoil the natural beauty of the bay ? Should they just put 6 in for now and test them over a 2 year period before putting in the other 24 ?
Should they just leave the bay alone as it is and always has been, with both the eel grass and Seahorses thriving in the present status quo ? -----------...Studland and the MCZs IMPORTANT NEWS

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Apologies for double posting but I have just posted the below on the 'sticky' thread, and wanted to draw you attention to it.

BORG is very pleased to be able to tell you that Finding Sanctuary has announced that it will not seek any restrictions on boats passing through or wishing to anchor in ordinary MCZ sites. There will be a number of 'reference sites' where anchoring would not be permitted, but nearly all these are located offshore and will not affect us. The one inshore reference site in Dorset at Arish Mell near Lulworth, BORG and RYA have managed to have the borders moved sufficiently to allow continued use of the Mupes Bay and Worbarrow Bay anchorages. We believe this has been achieved by sustained pressure from local groups including the fishing community, and the groups set up around around Studland to save it, and that BORGS arrival and recent publicity was all that was needed to tip the scales in our favour.

Studland Bay is NOT a reference site.

However, it is not all good news. Natural England, the Government Conservation agency, immediately responded by saying that they would NOT accept that recommendation for Studland, due to the eelgrass Beds. BORG took immediate steps to open negotiations with senior officials at NE and MMO to see whether they are prepared to accommodate the needs of the boating community in Studland. It is too early to predict any outcome, but their initial responses are encouraging. BORG is now looking to see if the Studland pressure groups and the RYA will come in 'on side' with us to help acheive a favourable outcomeB.O.R.G saysnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6916002254569181595.post-39424592008065644192011-01-23T09:14:41.972-08:002011-01-23T09:14:41.972-08:00Good !!! the Exe Estuary angle is worth investigat...Good !!! the Exe Estuary angle is worth investigating.
